Kaart Doornenburg

(Doornenburg, province of Gelderland) At the bifurcation of the rivers Rijn and Waal in the Betuwe region lies the ancient stronghold Doornenburg. The complex consists of a large, moated 13th century keep, and a forecourt surrounded by an extensive complex of 15th century outbuildings, that is often considered the most impressive of its kind in the Netherlands. Doornenburg was owned by seven families in succession, but was left abandoned and dilapidated in the 19th century. It was textile merchant Van Heek who came to the rescue in 1936, and instigated a full restoration that was completed in 1941. Unfortunately, Betuwe turned into a major WW2 battlefield soon after, and when the German occupiers made Doornenburg their regional headquarters it was bombarded and all but destroyed by the British allied forces. However, with the benefit of previous restoration experience the building was once again resurrected, and restored to its full splendour by 1968. Shortly afterwards, it was the setting for the popular children's TV-series "Floris", starring Rutger Hauer. Nowadays Doornenburg is a museum as well as a venue for weddings and other festivities. www.kasteeldoornenburg.nl
