Waar ligt Paviljoen Welgelegen
(Haarlem, province of Noord-Holland) This gem of neoclassicism, set on the northern edge of the Haarlemmerhout Gardens, was erected for the banker Henry Hope in 1789. It was much admired, especially for its early use of "French windows" and white plaster. Part of the L-shaped building housed Hope's extensive art collection. When the State of the Netherlands came into possession of Welgelegen after the French occupation, in 1814, it soon turned out that the building had several structural flaws and the costs of upkeep were astronomical. Eventually, Welgelegen became a museum. Nowadays it is the seat of the Provincial Goverment of Noord-Holland. Welgelegen is a unique example of this building type, beautifully preserved inside and out despite the addition of a hideous new wing in the 1950s. The magnificent oval music saloon is the highlight of the interior.

Landhuis Welgelegen, het huidige provinciehuis van Noord-Holland, ligt aan de Haarlemmerhout te Haarlem.
