Waar ligt Rechteren

(Dalfsen, province of Overijssel) Close to the river Vecht, in the middle of an extensive estate, sits Rechteren, one of the Netherlands' most impressive castles. The tower and rear wing date back to its earliest origins, in the 1300s. Initially owned by the Counts of Bentheim, the house soon became the property of the Van Heeckeren family, who thereafter called themselves Van Rechteren. In the 16th and 17th century the castle was at the center of several skirmishes. It was attacked by the Bishop of Utrecht, taken by Karel van Gelre, occupied by the Spaniards, and liberated by Prince Maurits (1590). All this left the house badly damaged. In 1726 the remaining medieval living quarters and freestanding tower were attached to each other again when a small, baroque palace was constructed to create a new entrance front. There were only minor changes since, and the house is still owned by the Van Rechteren family. It is presently the private home of the dowager Countess van Rechteren Limpurg, and closed to the public.
